If you try to use “yum” to install MySQL on CentOS, you’ll find that it actually installed MariaDB. Generally, MariaDB is a fork of MySql after it went under Oracle\u2019s management. <\/span>
\nIt\u2019s intended to be a \u201cdrop in\u201d alternative, significance that the customer is not expected to see any distinction between the two and all packages that work with MySql will continue to perform together with MariaDB.<\/span>
\nHowever, if you\u2019re enthusiastic about setting up MySql straight from the repos, here\u2019s how you should go about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Install the \u201cPHP-PDO\u201d Package<\/span><\/h3>\n

PHP has a special interface for interacting with databases called \u201cPHP PDO\u201d. It brings a lots of benefits including performance and security. It\u2019s setup instantly when you install the package for MySQL<\/a> support using the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n

yum install php-mysql<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
Installing this package will install \u201cphp-pdo\u201d as a dependency. Additionaly, this package is also required by the popular web hosting control panel WHMCS in case you ever want to set it up. So it\u2019s a great thing to have in general.<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/div>\n
Getting the Repo for MySql<\/span><\/h3>\n
<\/div>\n
To get the official repo for MySql, visit the following website: https:\/\/dev.mysql.com\/downloads\/repo\/yum\/<\/strong>. Over here, scroll down and you\u2019ll find a number of download locations for RedHat and Fedora distributions. CentOS<\/a> is basically just RedHat, so choose the version of the OS that you\u2019re running and click the \u201cDownload\u201d link as shown here:<\/span><\/p>\n

This will take you to a page asking you to sign up for an Oracle account. You can ignore all that and go directly to the link at the bottom saying \u201cNo thanks, just start my download\u201d<\/strong>. However, instead of downloading the rpm into our PC, we\u2019re going to copy the URL of the link instead:<\/span><\/p>\n

In this example, the URL links to https:\/\/dev.mysql.com\/get\/mysql57-community-release-el7-11.noarch.rpm.<\/strong> This is the RPM we\u2019re going to use.<\/span>
\nOpen up your Linux terminal<\/a> and run the following commands:<\/span><\/p>\n

wget https:\/\/dev.mysql.com\/get\/mysql57-community-release-el7-11.noarch.rpm\r\nrpm -ivh mysql-community-release-el7-5.noarch.rpm<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
Replace the text in bold with the URL you got earlier, and the name of the file that was actually downloaded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the installation of this package. We will get two new yum repo related to MySQL:<\/p>\n

ls -1 \/etc\/yum.repos.d\/mysql-community*\r\n\/etc\/yum.repos.d\/mysql-community.repo\r\n\/etc\/yum.repos.d\/mysql-community-source.repo<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n

After it\u2019s done, you\u2019re now ready to install MySql server<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
Installing MySQL Server<\/span><\/h3>\n
After the repo has been installed, installing MySql is easy. Just run:<\/span><\/p>\n

yum install mysql-server<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
This will install the most stable version of MySql<\/a>.<\/span>
\nIn addition, it also includes the MySQL client<\/a>. This allows us to interact with the server, add users, passwords, and all that sort of thing.<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nYou can check the version after installation using the command:<\/span><\/p>\n
\n
mysql --version<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
After that start the MySQL<\/a> daemon service like this:<\/span><\/p>\n

systemctl start mysqld<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
Logging in for the First Time<\/span><\/h3>\n
When MySql installed, it generates a temporary random password for root in the following file:<\/span><\/p>\n
\n
\/var\/log\/mysqld.log<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
Open it using a text editor like nano. You should see the following line somewhere inside the code: A temporary password is generated\u2026<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span>
\nCopy this password \u2013 you\u2019ll need it for the first time you log in as root. Then enter the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n

mysql -u root -p<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
This will prompt you for the root password<\/a> you get earlier. Simply enter it and you\u2019re in!<\/span>
