CentOS is actually used for building servers, mainframes, workstations etc..<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; line-height: 1.5;\">So today, I will guide you with some of the basic steps that you need to do before you build a working server on CentOS 6. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; line-height: 1.5;\">You can simply set up <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/install-lnmp-centos-7-2\/\">Nginx<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/how-to-install-linux-apache-mysql-php-on-centos-6-x\/\">Apache<\/a>, Lighthttpd or any other webserver that you want to set up, But his practice is to tweak and apply some basic security protection on your server and make it real private. For example if you want to modify the default root login,change default SSH port and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These initial CentOS server setup is strongly recommended. However the decision is up to you. If you own a dedicated server or a VPS and so you can follow this guide now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 1 &#8211;<\/strong> The first step is that you have to login to your remote server through an SSH connection. You can use either <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/using-putty-connect-server-ssh-windows\/\">Putty in Windows<\/a> or the Terminal if you are using a Mac or Linux. Then you will have to login as root user. If you are logging in for the first time, then the Putty will ask you to cache the host key of the server in the registry. Now you will see the following kind of window. You don\u2019t need to worry about it, just click on Yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/putty-key\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5097\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5097 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Putty-key.jpg\" alt=\"Putty key\" width=\"501\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Putty-key.jpg 501w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Putty-key-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Putty-key-320x210.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Putty-key-239x157.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 2 \u2013<\/strong> <strong>Change default root password<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sometimes when a server or a VPS is created, a random password is generated by the provider\u2019s management software. It will be good for you if you change the password to something that you can remember easily, but it should be hard enough to break. To change the root password of your <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/install-fail2ban-centos\/\">CentOS<\/a> system, you can use the below command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">passwd<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Then you will be ask to enter new password twice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5096\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5096 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup\" width=\"641\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup.jpg 641w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-636x236.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-320x119.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-239x89.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 3 &#8211;<\/strong> After completing above two steps now you need to create a new username as you have to disable the Root login later also Root is a very common user name so it will be very easy for the hackers to guess this username so you will have to disable the root login and create a new username. This is just like administrator or admin if you are using Windows. You can use the command below to create a new username:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">\/usr\/sbin\/adduser newuser<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Note: change \u201cnewuser\u201d above with your own new username. In this example I use my name \u201ccmab\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then enter this command to setup password for that new user:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">passwd newuser<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5098\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5098 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup1.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup1\" width=\"473\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup1.jpg 473w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup1-300x105.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup1-320x112.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup1-239x83.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 4 &#8211;<\/strong> So now you have to setup root privileges for that user. so once you logged in to your server using that new user you will still be able to perform any root only tasks. To do that simply issue this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">\/usr\/sbin\/visudo<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then look for the line \/ section called:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \"># User privilege specification\r\nroot ALL=(ALL) ALL<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">0r in different CentOS release it may also like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">## Allow root to run any commands anywhere\r\n\r\nroot ALL=(ALL) ALL<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; line-height: 1.5;\">Then add this line right after the root line:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">## Allow root to run any commands anywhere\r\nroot ALL=(ALL) ALL\r\nnewuser ALL=(ALL) ALL<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It should look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5101\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5101 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-2.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup 2\" width=\"577\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-2.jpg 577w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-2-300x49.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-2-320x52.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-2-239x39.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 5 &#8211;<\/strong> Change SSH default port and disable root login,To perform this action, you have to edit the \u201csshd_config\u201d file. This is the main configuration file of SSH service in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/reset-forgotten-root-password-centos-6-5\/\">CentOS server<\/a>. You can either use the Nano or vi editor to edit it. Personally, I am using the Nano editor right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">nano \/etc\/ssh\/sshd_config<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then you have to enter the following line:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">#port 22<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You have to remove the # symbol and change the default port that is 22 to any number you want between 1025 and 65536. I am using port 22000 as an example.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">port 2222<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The following kind of screen should appear now:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup-3-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5100\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5100 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup 3\" width=\"428\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-3-1.jpg 428w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-3-1-300x63.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-3-1-320x67.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-3-1-239x50.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next, also find:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">#PermitRootLogin yes<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remove the # symbol and change yes to no<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">PermitRootLogin no<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Screen will look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5102\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5102 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-4.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup 4\" width=\"536\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-4.jpg 536w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-4-300x93.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-4-320x100.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-4-239x74.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next, find this line:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">#UseDNS yes<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remove the # symbol and change yes to no<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> It may look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5103\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5103 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-5.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup 5\" width=\"410\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-5.jpg 410w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-5-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-5-320x151.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-5-239x113.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now proceed to the next step:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 6 \u2013<\/strong> Give privileges to the newuser to login to your server through SSH. For this purpose, Simply add this line in the very bottom of that file:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">AllowUsers newuser<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Of course you have to replace <strong>\u201cnewuser\u201d<\/strong> with your own username created in the step 3 above. Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/basic-centos-configurations-building-working-server\/basic-centos-setup-6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5104\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5104 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-6.jpg\" alt=\"basic centos setup 6\" width=\"645\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-6.jpg 645w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-6-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-6-636x177.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-6-320x89.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/basic-centos-setup-6-239x67.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once done, hit Control+O to save then Control+X to exit Nano editor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 7 \u2013<\/strong> Now you have to reload the SSH service. To make sure the new configuration is used by the service, simply reload SSH by using this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">\/etc\/init.d\/sshd reload<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It should return with the OK message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Step 8 \u2013<\/strong> Now all of your basic <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/reset-root-password-centos-7-rhel-7\/\">CentOS<\/a> settings are done, Give it a try! To make sure all the settings you defined in the SSH config file really works.
