This information will show you how to move a website from cPanel to the un-managed server you\u2019ve installed. The phrase \u201cServer\u201d here relates to either VPS or Dedicated server.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main objective of this weblog is to show beginners how to handle un-managed servers.<\/span><\/p>\n

I posted some basic tutorials on how to build and setup your own un-managed server either like<\/span> LNMP on CentOS<\/a>,working<\/span> Debian server<\/a> and basic<\/span> Ubuntu setup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Preparation\u00a0before starting migration:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

1. Make sure you have access to your old host with IP, username and password to login to your site’s cPanel.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. I assume here that you have built and setup your own server and it is ready to host a website (it should already have a working web server, mail server, php5 and MySQL server).<\/span><\/p>\n

3. In this tutorial I will use my server running CentOS.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Make sure you have proper knowledge to access your new server via SSH. In Windows, you can simply use Putty. Read my previous post about how to use Putty to SSH your server<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. In this guide I will try to move a blog running WordPress CMS<\/a>. This guide can be applicable to all kind of websites using MySQL database.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Also make sure to put your website to a frozen state or maintenance mode<\/a>. This is quite necessary for your website users .I will not tell you how to do that as this can change according to the script your website is using. In WordPress, you can simply use a plugin called \u201ccode-freeze\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Before proceeding make sure, your new server is online and really ready to host your website.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Also, make sure your domain name still resolving to old host not to the new server. You better can change your domain\u2019s NS record later after the website migration<\/a> completed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The website Migration process:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Step 1 \u2013<\/strong> First, we have to find a way to transfer all files from your old host to your new server. There are two main ways you can use to complete this process: First, by creating full backup of your website files; Secondly, you can use ftp and let your new server to access all files in old host. Whatever the way you will use,simply login to your old host cPanel area<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese earlier steps we are using the first manual way. You will also find the Alternative way to move files<\/strong> so keep reading.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2 \u2013<\/strong> Here you will create backup of all your files. In cPanel, launch \u201cFile Manager\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3 \u2013<\/strong> Next, go to your cPanel\u2019s File Manager and click \u201cSelect All\u201d option. Optionally, you can also exclude files\/folders from backup by pressing and holding Control key on your keyboard then click on files \/ folders you wish to exclude.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 4 \u2013<\/strong> Once done, hit the \u201cCompress\u201d icon then choose \u201czip archive\u201d in Compression Type. Once done, give the backup file a name then hit the \u201cCompress Files\u201d button.Wait for it to finish. It depends on size no of the files you have.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this example my backup file name is \u201cnewbackup.zip\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStep 5 \u2013<\/strong> Login to your new server via SSH.It is recommended to login to your new server with root privilege.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 6 \u2013<\/strong> In your new server, go to the root folder of your site\u2019s document. It usually is \u201cvar\/www\/domain.com\/public_html\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 7 \u2013<\/strong> Now it\u2019s time to download the backup file you\u2019ve created. Use the \u201cwget\u201d command:<\/span><\/p>\n

wget http:\/\/domain.com\/path\/to\/file.zip\r\nexample:\r\nwget https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/newbackup.zip<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n
Step 8 \u2013<\/strong> So all your files have been transferred to the new server. Now all you have to do is extracting the backup file using unzip command.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once done, you can check all files and folders list by typing \u201cls\u201d<\/strong> command then hit Enter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 9 \u2013<\/strong> Now, it is time to also move your site\u2019s database. Go back to your old host cPanel area then click the \u201cBackup Wizard\u201d icon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, click the \u201cBackup\u201d button.<\/span><\/p>\n
Next, click the \u201cMySQL Databases\u201d option under \u201cSelect Partial Backup\u201d section.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the next page you\u2019ll see all<\/span> available MySQL database.Select your website database.<\/span><\/p>\n
Next, right-click on the database link and copy that link \/ url (you may also paste it to notepad first).<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 10<\/strong> \u2013 Now go back to your SSH client. I assume you are still in \u201c\/var\/www\/domain.com\/public_html or \u201d then issue following command:<\/span><\/p>\n
