{"id":4836,"date":"2016-08-01T12:05:55","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T12:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/?p=4836"},"modified":"2021-02-04T06:13:51","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T06:13:51","slug":"4836-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/","title":{"rendered":"How to install and setup Bind9 on Ubuntu server"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this article I will explain how to install and setup DNS server inside your operating system to manage your domains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So here i assume that you already know how to <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/how-to-build-working-ubuntu-server\/\">setup a working Ubuntu server<\/a> and install <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/how-to-install-mysql-server-on-ubuntu\/\">MySQL<\/a> on a server based on Ubuntu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First login to your server via <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/using-putty-connect-server-ssh-windows\/\">SSH<\/a> connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then enter your root password.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Step:1.INSTALL BIND9<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Type this command then hit enter:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">apt-get install bind9<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/install-bind\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4838\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4838 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Install-bind.jpg\" alt=\"Install bind\" width=\"724\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Install-bind.jpg 724w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Install-bind-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Install-bind-636x254.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Install-bind-320x128.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Install-bind-239x95.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once done you\u2019ll see a message saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">* Starting domain name service... bind9 [OK]<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">STEP 2. BASIC CONFIGURATION<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So you have successfully installed BIND9 on your server. Now i will show you a basic configuration how to setup your domain to resolve to your server. Here\u2019s what I did. Run following command then hit Enter on your keyboard:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">nano \/etc\/bind\/named.conf.local<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now Copy-paste below command into your favorite text editor like Notepad, Text-pad.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">zone \"domain.com\" {\r\ntype master;\r\nfile \"\/etc\/bind\/zones\/domain.com.db\";\r\n};\r\n\r\nzone \"3.2.1.in-addr.arpa\" {\r\ntype master;\r\nfile \"\/etc\/bind\/zones\/rev.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa\";<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here in this post am using my own domain name for all commands,You\u2019ll need to replace \u201cdomain.com\u201d with your own domain name and corresponding TLD. Also, you have to replace xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and\u00a0rev.3.2.1\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with IP address of your server.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once you\u2019ve changed the necessary values, you can paste it into Nano editor. You can also easily type above command syntax to Nano editor screen while replacing necessary values during your typing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/dns-configuration1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4839\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4839 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration1.jpg\" alt=\"DNS configuration1\" width=\"659\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration1.jpg 659w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration1-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration1-636x347.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration1-320x175.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration1-239x131.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Save the file then hit Control+X to exit Nano editor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now go to bind directory to make other things. Type this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">cd \/etc\/bind<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Create new directory called \u201czones\u201d inside this by using this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">mkdir zones<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now enter into that directory as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">cd zones<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/dns-configuration2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4840\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4840 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration2.jpg\" alt=\"DNS configuration2\" width=\"509\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration2.jpg 509w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration2-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration2-320x64.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration2-239x48.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then create new file called \u201cyourdomainname.com.db\u201c. Type this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">nano cpanelplesk.com.db<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At this part you\u2019ll also need to replace \u201cdomain.com\u201d with your own domain name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That command open Nano editor screen once again. Next, you can either copy these syntax to Notepad and edit it or simply type it in Nano editor directly:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">; BIND data file for domain.com\r\n;\r\n$TTL 14400\r\n@ IN SOA ns1.domain.com. host.domain.com. (\r\n201006601 ; Serial\r\n7200 ; Refresh\r\n120 ; Retry\r\n2419200 ; Expire\r\n604800) ; Default TTL\r\n;\r\ndomain.com. IN NS ns1.domain.com.\r\ndomain.com. IN NS ns2.domain.com.\r\n\r\ndomain.com. IN MX 10 mail.domain.com.\r\ndomain.com. IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\r\n\r\nns1 IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\r\nns2 IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\r\nwww IN CNAME domain.com.\r\nmail IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\r\nftp IN CNAME domain.com.\r\ndomain.com. IN TXT \"v=spf1 ip4:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx a mx ~all\"\r\nmail IN TXT \"v=spf1 a -all\"<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you have two IPs, you can replace \u201cns1 and ns2 IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\u201d with your IP addresses. Otherwise simply you can use the one IP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/dns-configuration3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4841\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4841 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration3.jpg\" alt=\"DNS configuration3\" width=\"665\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration3.jpg 665w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration3-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration3-636x414.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration3-320x208.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration3-239x156.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 665px) 100vw, 665px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once done editing Hit control+O to save file then hit control+X to exit the nano editor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now it\u2019s time to define reverse <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/clean-your-dns-cache\/\">DNS<\/a> lookup. If you are not familiar? Don\u2019t worry simply follow my steps. Type this command syntax:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">nano \/etc\/bind\/zones\/rev.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Don&#8217;t forget to replace rev.3.2.1 with your server IP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Add following lines inside that file:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">@ IN SOA domain.com. host.domain.com. (\r\n2010081401;\r\n28800;\r\n604800;\r\n604800;\r\n86400 );\r\n\r\nIN NS ns1.domain.com.\r\n4 IN PTR domain.com.<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Replace \u201chost.domain.com\u201d with your own server\u2019s host name. Once done, press Control+O to save then Control+X to exit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/dns-configuration4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4842\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4842 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4.jpg\" alt=\"DNS configuration4\" width=\"783\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4.jpg 783w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4-300x93.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4-768x238.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4-636x197.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4-320x99.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration4-239x74.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 783px) 100vw, 783px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is another file you have to edit. Run this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">nano \/etc\/resolv.conf<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now add following line at the top of any lines you see there:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">search domain.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/4836-2\/dns-configuration5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4843\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4843 pleslwp\" src=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration5.jpg\" alt=\"DNS configuration5\" width=\"707\" height=\"84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration5.jpg 707w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration5-300x36.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration5-636x76.jpg 636w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration5-320x38.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DNS-configuration5-239x28.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once done, press Control+O to save followed by Control+X to exit the editor. That is it. But to make sure that all recent changes implemented, you better restart <a href=\"https:\/\/cpanelplesk.com\/wp62\/error-reloading-bind-on-server\/\">Bind9<\/a> service using this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">\/etc\/init.d\/bind9 restart<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">STEP 3. CHANGE NAMESERVER IN YOUR DOMAIN REGISTRAR<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I will not describe this last phase because the way it can be done is really differ. This will depend on which domain registrar you purchased the domain from. E.g: GoDaddy, NameCheap,and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The key factor is to add ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com there. Once done, delay for about 24 hours for your domain to resolve to your web server but sometimes it is quicker and done within couple of hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can validate it quickly by checking your domain name via web browser.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>STEP 4. TEST YOUR DNS<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this case you have to\u00a0install additional tool called \u201cDNS Utility\u201d. To install it follow the steps below:<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"highlighter_51136\" class=\"syntaxhighlighter shell\">\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">apt-get install dnsutils\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once the install process finished, run following command:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"command-sh\">\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">dig domain.com<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Done.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this article I will explain how to install and setup DNS server inside your operating system to manage your domains.
